Meet the camper: Sierra Deitz

By Shelby Simpson/Advanced Writing

Sierra Deitz wants to get a head start on her school year by attending the Flint Hills Publications Workshop at Kansas State.

Deitz has been involved with Blue Valley West’s journalism program for three years. Her freshman year, she took a basic journalism class where she had to memorize the First Amendment, and she learned what it meant to be a writer.

The next year, she joined the yearbook staff. She contributed design ideas and even came to school on her time off during spring break to work on the yearbook.

For Deitz’s junior year she is going to be the section editor of academics.

“Some of my roles as section editor are writing my own pages, find people that other staff members need to interview, create story and design ideas and be an adviser to the rest of the staff,” Deitz said.

Deitz came to the the Flint Hills Publication Workshop because she wants to grow as a member of her yearbook staff, and later in life she hopes to study graphic design. She is taking the Yearbook Writing and Design track. She said said loves the new people she is meeting from different parts of Kansas and has high expectations for herself for her future years.

“My senior year I hope to be a co-editor,” Deitz said. “I need to know as much about yearbook writing and design that I can.”
