Meet the camper: Megan Walters

By Malory White/Advanced Writing

Floating in and out of sessions, clicking off frames as they go, camp photographers view life at the Flint Hills Publications Workshop behind the lens.

For senior Megan Walters, experiencing camp this way just clicks.

“This is my first journalism camp,” said Walters, a senior at Central High School in St. Joseph, Mo. “I want to improve my photo editing and photo taking skills.”

After just the first day, Walters said she had learned new tips and tricks to take back to her publications.

“We learned about the history of photography and how the camera works,” Walters said. “We practiced taking pictures, uploading them to Bridge [an Adobe software program that helps you organize, rate and caption pictures] and instructors critique them.”

Walters and other photographers will continue to take pictures of events the rest of the week. Some photos be featured in the camp’s newspaper, “The Kedzie Krier,” although the tradition of the photos also being featured in the camp’s yearbook, “The Wildcat,” may be discontinued for the 2012 camp.

Whether candid or constructed, a photo of any FHPW faculty member or student has the potential to be published. Fellow photographer senior Hayden Parks, who attends Pittsburg High School, says its best to act natural and hope for the best.

“Our assignment is to record as much as we can,” Walters said.
