Meet the Camper: Shelby Simpson

By Miranda Pouson/Advanced Writing

Some people have created stories ever since they can remember, but for Gardner Edgerton High School sophomore Shelby Simpson it’s a new passion.

She didn’t get into writing until the beginning of her freshman year. She can read or write any story she feels like: mystery, suspense, fact, report. Newspaper-worthy or refrigerator-worthy. To improve her writing, Simpson came to the Flint Hills Publications Workshop.

“I like to make up stories and start small,” Simpson said. “So, I guess prompts and stuff.”

She doesn’t only write fiction. Her freshman year, Simpson took an Introduction to Journalism course. She’s going on to continue her journalism skills this year as she prepares to work on the staff of her school’s newspaper.

Simpson loves to write in English class, but she also loves simply “learning about words and everything about English.”

When Simpson isn’t writing, she is practicing dance moves for her school’s dance team. Many people think writing stories and dancing don’t go together, but Simpson disagrees.

“It’s like telling a story in movement,” Simpson said.

When she graduates high school, she doesn’t plan on pursuing a career in dance or even written journalism.

“I want to hopefully be a news anchor and get out of my town,” Simpson said.
