Computer keys click while two girls position themselves in front of a white screen.

These co-editors and their six staff members have just three days to turn that blank screen into a eight page newspaper packed with stories about the Flint Hills Publications Workshop.

Kedzie Krier co-editors Kassidy Gelazner, from McPherson High School, and Veronica Mulin, from Gardner-Edgerton High School, are in charge of assigning stories, picking layouts and choosing which pictures to include.

After writing personality profiles and brainstorming ideas, the two girls were chosen by adviser Jill Chittum.

“It’s hard to choose after only knowing the students for an hour,” Chittum said. “First impressions are important and after reading the personality profiles, I chose the strongest writers.”

The girls received the news with big smiles.

“I was so excited when Jill pulled us to the back and asked us to be editors,” Mulin said.

By Monday afternoon, stories were assigned and reporters scattered around the K-State campus conducting interviews.

“Everyone knows what to do,” Mulin said. “Now we are just getting to it as fast as we can.”

The editors said they enjoyed the hands-on experience although it is “hectic.” Gelazner said they would carry the experience to their own publications.

“It’s a lot more to do, but it’s preparing us for when we go back,” Gelazner said.
