Student story: Alternative edibles

By Kevin Adams

The smell of meatloaf lingered.

Instead of stuffing their bellies with spongy chunks Wednesday night, many students sought alternative nourishment.

Simply because the food served to students at the Flint Hills Publications Workshop was free that didn’t mean the picky weren’t willing to pay extra for the good stuff. A multitude of restaurants littered the Manhattan area.

“The meals aren’t very vegetarian friendly,” said Mikayla Frommer, a student at Lee’s Summit High School. “The main course has been meat almost every night. A side course of salad and corn isn’t enough.”

Others yet were willing to wait for their food to be delivered.

Pizza Shuttle was one of the more popular businesses for students and advisers to order from. Especially when it was meatloaf night.

“Red meat is gross,” said Ali Swee, a student at Notre Dame de Sion. “I don’t like hot dogs, hamburgers, bacon, and I dislike meatloaf. I had pizza, it was a much better alternative.”

Even more walked to the Chipotle in Aggieville for their sustenance.

“I like burritos,” said Jimmy Langton, a student at Shawnee Mission South High School. “We went to Chipotle, and I got a burrito with rice, black beans, chicken, salsa, cheese, sour cream and lettuce.”

Some like meatloaf, but choose not to eat it when made in quantity.

“Meatloaf isn’t bad, it’s just not the same when it’s made for 200 people,” said Katie Mahoney, a student at Notre Dame de Sion.
