Student column: DANGER: Comfort Zone

By Khloe Hines

Olivia Klenda nervously glanced up and down the fourth-floor hotel corridor.

She returned to her room and lay down on her bed, thinking of exactly who she would include in her photo assignment for the Flint Hills Publications Workshop.

Knock on the door across the hall, a roommate suggested.

Olivia didn’t panic. She walked out of the room, not speaking to anyone, and knocked on the door.

About nine minutes later, she rushed back into the room, explaining with a relieved expression that the girl across the hall was very friendly and didn’t make her feel awkward.

Learning to be comfortable in an unfamiliar environment is something the Kapaun Mt. Carmel junior cherishes.

“I enjoy being in places I am comfortable with,” Klenda said. “ I have high anxiety and stress when I am put in uncomfortable situations, but I enjoy meeting new people.”

This week at journalism camp offers a first-time experience in leaving the comfort zone for many campers. Talking with yearbook adviser, Linda Drake, made me realize that being nervous doesn’t just make students cringe.

“I know that my students know more than me,” Drake said. “ But camp is all about learning new techniques.”

Camp is narrowing down, and everyone has become immune to the different strangers roaming throughout camp. For Olivia, taking a risk brought a new level of excitement. Back in our room, she flipped through the photos on her camera joyfully.
