Student story-Cheyanne, Daniela and Staci delve into the fun and messy side of friendship

By Hannah Lujano

It was Mexican night and while most people in the dining area wore a sour look on their faces, three girls sitting in the middle of the room were the spicy table.

Olé.

The food served Monday night to Flint Hills Publication Workshoppers may have seemed like a relaxing entree to break the second layer of ice with newfound buddies. Though soft tacos were served, the exterior of most FHPW attendees was anything but soft.

One table however seemed to have no problem with breaking anything, or spilling anything for that matter. Daniela Morales, Cheyanne Alvarado and Staci Almquist sat amid a reservoir of lemonade, which had drenched the entire table.

“It was like that when we got here,” Staci said between giggles.

“Then why the hell did you sit here?” asked Daniela.

The eruption of laughs was interrupted only by the spittle coming from the lips of Cheyanne who sat in a small puddle of lemonade — the second cup spilled by the trio that evening.

It seemed like embarrassment was not part of their vernacular as the south of the border cuisine passed through their lips with about half of it falling to the ground.

“Oh goodness,” screeched Staci, “don’t drop any more crumbly wumblies!”

The infantile speech caused a second eruption from the group of friends.

Between brushing off the small meals that had accumulated on their shirts, the threesome discussed the extremely important events that occurred earlier in the day.

“Do you guys remember when Nikki sat on the whoopee cushion and it exploded?” inquired Daniela.

Blank looks.

“Yes, we do remember Daniela, that happened today,” answered the two counterparts in unison.

The bites that followed were rushed and forceful.

Without another word, the girls finished at the same time and left the table.

While walking out of the ballroom with all the confidence a teenager could muster, Staci and Cheyanne somehow didn’t notice the remnants of their meal — some bits of lettuce — stuck to the back of their shorts.
